Tuition Surcharge

"Effective with the Fall 1994 semester, all new undergraduates seeking a baccalaureate degree..will be subject to the policies of the Board of Governors relating to tuition surcharge"

Excerpt from the Reference to  UNC System Administrative Memorandum #348, September 15, 1994

Undergraduate students who attempt more than 140 credit hours (Or more than 110% of the hours required completing their baccalaureate degree program) are subject to a 25% tuition surcharge on the excess hours taken. However, the surcharge will not apply to students who exceed these credit hour limits while completing their degree within the equivalent of four academic years, or in the case of five-year programs, within the equivalent of five academic years. Finally, the surcharge does not apply to students who entered the University before Fall 1994.

The surcharge is established in the UNC Policy Manual,
section 1000.1.5[G] ( http://www.northcarolina.edu/content.php/legal/
policymanual/uncpolicymanual_1000_1_5g.htm
)

WHAT ELSE YOU SHOULD KNOW

  • Transfer credits count in the calculation of the surcharge!
  • Double majors are not exempt from the surcharge.
  • Double degree students are allowed additional coursework before the surcharge is applied, 110% of the credit hours needed for both degrees.
  • All withdrawals, repeats, and failed courses count!
  • Credit by Exam, Advanced Placement, and CLEP credit is exempt from the surcharge.
  • Summer courses taken at any of the 16 UNC campuses are exempt from the surcharge.
  • Students who entered UNC Charlotte before Fall 1994 are exempt from the surcharge.
  • College credits attempted while enrolled in high school are also exempt.

What do I do if I have questions about the surcharge on my account?

If you are assessed the surcharge and you feel an error was made in the administration of the above procedures, you may request a review of your record by contacting the Registrar's Office and completing a surcharge review form. The form requires that you state the specific error you believe justifies a review.

(Example: I believe my summer school transfer credits from UNC-A were not calculated correctly.)

Your record cannot be reconsidered without specific grounds for the review. Contact the Office of the Registrar at 704-687-3487.

Is there an appeal process?

The Tuition Surcharge is a fee required by the General Administration of the University of North Carolina System and it is not a UNC Charlotte fee. There is not an appeals process for this fee!
