The
UNC Charlotte Veteran Services Office (VSO) is pleased to welcome
veterans and others to our webpage. Take a look around and you will
find that you can notify us of your intended enrollment, ask questions,
and receive information. You can also download forms and inquire about
your claim status from the VA government web page. We will also keep
you up to date on important information that you should know.
The
VA Education Service administers the following benefit programs. We
trust you will find what you are looking for in our program
descriptions. If you need additional assistance, please call VA's
toll-free number 1-800-827-1000 to speak with a
Veterans Benefits Counselor. These counselors are located in
Winston-Salem and they are there to help you with your educational
questions and benefits.
Chapter 30: Montgomery GI Bill (service
7/1/85-6/30/88) Active Duty Educational Assistance- Active Duty (MGIB) *
The Montgomery GI Bill program provides up to
36 months of education benefits. Generally, benefits are payable for 10
years following your release from active duty. This program is also
commonly known as Chapter 30.
Chapter 1606: Montgomery GI Bill -
Selected Reserve (MGIB-SR)*
The MGIB-SR program may be available to you if
you are a member of the Selected Reserve. The Selected Reserve includes
the Army Reserve, Navy Reserve, Air Force Reserve, Marine Corps Reserve
and Coast Guard Reserve, and the Army National Guard and the Air
National Guard. This program is known as Chapter 1606.
Chapter 1607: Reserve Educational
Assistance Program (REAP)*
REAP was established as a part of the Ronald W.
Reagan National Defense Authorization Act for Fiscal Year 2005. It is a
new Department of Defense education benefit program designed to provide
educational assistance to members of the Reserve components called or
ordered to active duty in response to a war or national emergency
(contingency operation) as declared by the President or Congress. This
new program makes certain individuals who were activated after
September 11, 2001 either eligible for education benefits or eligible
for increased benefits.
VEAP is available if you first entered
active duty between January 1, 1977 and June 30, 1985 and you elected
to make contributions from your military pay to participate in this
education benefit program. Your contributions are matched on a $2 for
$1 basis by the Government. This program is known as Chapter 32.
Chapter 35: Survivors' and Dependents'
Educational Assistance Program (DEA) *
DEA
provides education and training opportunities to eligible dependents of
veterans who are permanently and totally disabled due to a
service-related condition, or who died while on active duty or as a
result of a service related condition. The program offers up to 45
months of education benefits. This program is known as Chapter 35.
Note: *These benefits may be used for degree
and certificate programs, flight training, apprenticeship/on-the-job
training and correspondence courses. Remedial, deficiency, and
refresher courses may be approved under certain circumstances, contact
your school certifying official for details.
Eligibility
Montgomery GI Bill:
Persons
who first entered active duty after June 30, 1985, are generally
eligible. Some Vietnam Era veterans and certain veterans separated
under special programs are also eligible. The bill also includes a
program for certain reservist and National Guard members.
Veterans Educational Assistance program
(VEAP):
This program is for veterans who entered
active duty for the first time after December 1, 1976 and before July
1, 1985, who contributed to a training fund.
Survivors' & Dependents'
Educational Assistance:
Some family members of
diabled or deceased veterans are eligible for educational benefits.
Time Limits: Generally,
veterans have 10 years from the date they were last released from
active duty to use their educational benefits. Spouses generally have
10 years from the date they are found eligible. Children are
generally eligible from age 18 until age 26. These limits can
sometimes be extended; you should write to Atlanta Regional Office.

To apply for VA benefits, you must
first be admitted into UNC Charlotte.
Contact the VA Certifying Official to find out
the correct application for VA educational Benefits. (Chapter 30, 32
and 1606 can download forms below.)
New Student/ never used your benefits
before:

22-1990 (also attach a copy of your DD-214-member #4 or NOBE)

these forms are filled out they must be mailed to the Veterans Service
office along with the VA Enrollment form(in-house form) and
Student Responsibilities form below:

You will not hear anything from VA for at least 45-60 working
days after you submit your certification application to the
Veterans Service Office.

requirements must always be complete before your certification
application is submitted to Atlanta from our office. If you
are a transfer student your transfer credits must be complete and
approved by your major department.***
Benefits Enrollment
Information
In
order to receive benefits, you must be enrolled by a VA Certifying
Official at the University. Students can submit their enrollment to the
UNC Charlotte Veterans Services Office by phone, FAX, WEB, in person or
by e-mail. This must be done at least 1 time per year (you must give
the certifying official your credit hours by semester for the year).
You can also come in each semester if you would prefer. VA will only
accept up to 1 year in advance.

Student Programs
Work-Study Program
This
program is available to any student receiving VA education benefits who
is attending school three-quarter time or more. An individual working
under this program may work at the school's Veterans Service Office, VA
Regional Office, VA Medical Facilities, or at approved State employment
offices. Work-study students are paid at either the state or Federal
minimum wage, which ever is greater. If you have questions on this

Tutorial Assistance Program
Tutorial
assistance is available if you are receiving VA educational assistance
at the half-time or more rate and have a deficiency in a subject making
tutoring necessary. If you have questions on this program please
contact the VA toll-free number 1-800-827-1000 or
the VA Certifying Official in the Veterans Service Office on campus.
Staying on Track
To
keep on track there are a few things that you need to know:
Make satisfactory progress towards your
VA educational Goals.
Know what courses are required for your program. Remember: VA will only pay for required
courses within your program!
Full time benefits are equal to 12 or more
credit hours for undergraduate students, and 9 or more hours for
Graduate students within Fall or Spring terms.
Summer programs are computed by VA by using the
following equation:
[Semester Hours] x 18 divided by [# of weeks in the term]
VA
students are responsible for payments of tuition, fees and books. VA
payments are made directly to the student after classes begin. If there
are any financial arrangements to be made, they should be made with The
Office of Student Accounts at 704/687-2215.
Direct
Deposit Information:
Federal Law requires all payments for Chapter 30 benefits to be made by
direct deposit. You must provide the following: VA File Number, Routing
Number of Financial Institution, and checking or savings account number.
Schedule Changes
Changes in your Major:
VA
form 22-1995 or form 22-5495 needs to be filled out or benefits could be terminated.(Form 22-1995) (Form 22-5495)
Program changes (Change in Chapter
Benefits)::
Students must submit VA form 22-1990
and a current NOBE or DD-214 to the certifying official. (Form 22-1990)
***In-House
enrollment forms must be filled out at least once a year. This provides
our office with written documentation of your enrollment intentions.
Failure to do this means you will not be certified by our office and,
therefore, will receive no VA funding.***
Returning to Active Duty
If
you are being called to active duty send us a copy of your orders and
we will drop your classes. Any tuition and fees paid will be refunded.
We will also notify the Financial Aid Office. By taking your parking
decal to Auxiliary Services, you can receive a full refund. If you have
a meal plan, refunds are as follows:
Meal plans that have "meals" and
"declining balance" (Plans A through E) are pro-rated and refunded to
deployed students.
Meal plans that are all "declining balance"
(Plans F, G and K), the remaining balance is refunded.
Money deposited in 49er accounts, the remaining
balance is refunded.
